Wooden flutes are commonly called recorders or fifes, depending on their design and how they are played. They are wind instruments made mainly from softer types of wood because soft wood has good acoustic properties.

The wooden flute is considered one of the oldest instruments, first appearing about 43,000 years ago in prehistoric times. Later, the flute was improved in the 19th century when German inventor Theobald Boehm developed a modern fingering system and patented it in 1847.

It may have different hole counts, usually having 6 holes in simple traditional flutes, 8 holes in some modern flutes, and about 17 holes in advanced flutes with dual rows to allow more musical notes and better tonal control.

Place your left thumb on the back key and let your fingers rest naturally and curved on the upper holes, while your right thumb supports the flute from below. Keep your fingers relaxed and slightly curved on the keys instead of stiff or flat for easier playing.

To play the wooden flute, hold it horizontally, cover the finger holes with your fingers, and blow gently into the mouthpiece to produce sound. Practice controlling your breath and moving your fingers smoothly to change notes correctly.

To make a wooden flute, pick a straight, dry piece of wood and make holes in it according to the musical scale you want. Then smooth and shape the flute, and adjust the holes until it makes the right sound.

Wipe the wooden flute with a soft, dry cloth after every use to remove moisture and dirt. Store it in a protective case away from heat and apply natural oil occasionally to prevent cracking.

Apply a small amount of bore oil on a soft cloth or cleaning rod and gently wipe the inside of the flute. Do this once every few weeks to prevent the wood from drying and to maintain the flute’s quality.

The price of a flute varies depending on its quality, brand, and craftsmanship. Generally, it costs between $50 and $100 or more for high-quality professional flutes.
